Foreign Language Department
The Foreign Language
Department provides a fine linguistic education to be used as a tool by the students to
contribute significantly to the improvement of society.
The Foreign Language Department at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary is formed by
a highly qualified teaching staff. We believe that learning a second language is important
as it helps people understand the differences and similarities between the lifestyle of
other cultures and one's own.
The department recognizes Latin to be the root of all romance languages and cultures. Latin is needed for its proven success in exercising memory, improving study habits, and providing a firm linguistic basis for further study. Studying Latin, therefore, complies with our general philosophy of providing a thorough and balanced education. Greek is recognized as being the complementary language to Latin as a foundation for Western thought. The need for Greek is the opportunity it affords students to read a seminal language, but especially the New Testament. Studying Greek, then, supports our educational goals and the goals of a seminary.
The language department recognizes Spanish to be the language of an increasing population of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Studying Spanish, therefore, is important in preparing students to communicate and understand and minister to the Hispanic community in its own language. At Archbishop Quigley a student who wishes to begin his study of the Spanish language and culture may take our Spanish Level I course. For the student who possesses the ability to speak Spanish, he is given the opportunity to enhance his reading, writing, comprehension and grammar skills by pursuing the Native Speaker Spanish curriculum.
