Social Studies

Fr. Zake teaching history

The Quigley Social Studies department offers a three year program designed to educate the students in a wide range of historic, political, social, economic and cultural experiences.  Incorporating solid writing and analytical skills, the classes are designed to promote awareness, analysis and development of a perspective on history and the social sciences. In the Sophomore year,  students spend the entire year studying World History, examining the global perspective from ancient times to the modern world, analyzing trends and developments throughout civilization to gain perspective as to the forces which shape the world they live in today.

In junior year, students have greater choices based along their interests.  The core class for juniors is United States History, a basic survey of the development and growth of our nation.  Students can participate in a regular survey course or can be selected to attempt Advanced Placement, which is a more accelerated course designed with an eye to taking the AP exam at the end of the year for college credit. Also in junior and continuing into senior year, students can choose from a wide variety of quarter and semester courses  which focus on individual disciplines in the social studies field.  These courses provide an in-depth consideration of topics in those areas with a heavy concentration on local history and culture as well as recent and topical events.

Also in senior year, European History AP is offered to select students  who wish to continue a greater understanding of world affairs.  In addition, students can also have options for independent study to supplement their educational experiences.
