The Chessnuts, Archbishop Quigley's Chess team, wound up their season in grand style by capturing the Conference Championship at the playoff tournament held at De La Salle on April 11. Their regular season resulted in a second place finish with only one loss to the undefeated team from St. Ignatius Prep.

As the second seed in the playoffs, the team first played De La Salle and scored a convincing win. They then faced a young but talented team from Luther South and after a hard fought set of games managed another win to set up the championship match with first seed St. Ignatius. After wins by Mike Zigulich on board 1 and Andy Kirchoff on board 8, followed by a loss on board 7 with
Kevin Lowe, the coach from St. Ignatius, Sean Bradley, informed his remaining boards that they needed wins to gain a victory. When Quigley's fifth board, Joe Frey, scored a victory it was all over and Quigley defended its championship of the conference for the fourth year in a row.
