Maria is a native of Costa Rica. She attended the National University of Costa Rica in Heredia, where she earned an Associate degree in Natural Sciences. Additionally, she received a degree in Spanish Secondary Education from Northeastern Illinois University. In the summers of 2002 and 2003 she completed four courses at the University of Costa Rica for AP Spanish, concentrating on authors like Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende and other important and influential writers from Latin America. Maria has taught in a number of schools, both public and private--most recently at Notre Dame High School for Girls in Chicago. Maria is actively involved in her parish-where she is a Minister of Care, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Coordinator of the Cana Confrence, and Coordinator of Hispanic Liturgy. Along with her husband Emmanuel, she is busy raising four wonderful children and two granddaughters.
