The Summer Enrichment Program is a
two-week educational experience for boys currently in 6th and 7th grade. This program
offers a unique experience for young boys to experiment in areas of personal interest in
an exciting and challenging high school environment. The goal of the Summer Enrichment
Program is to encourage young men to enjoy the themselves in the area of technology,
academics, or sports.
The Summer Enrichment Program offers 24 different courses from which the participants will
take six courses per day, Monday through Friday. All students are encouraged to select 1
sports activity (maximum of 2 per day). We offer some of the most exciting and educational
events, that allow young adults discover Quigley as well as equip themselves with useful
knowledge.
Schedule
Summer Enrichment 2003 will meet Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Students will take 6 courses per day. All students are encouraged to select 1 sports
activity (maximum of 2) per day. Students will be assigned to courses based on their order
of preference upon receipt of completed registration form and deposit. While we will do
our best to give each student his top choices, course enrollment is limited in size, and
course conflicts may also occur. Archbishop Quigley reserves the right to change/delete
courses if circumstances require. In addition to the regular classes, there will be one or
two field trips during the two week term.
Cost
Early Bird Registration postmarked by April 15: $130
Regular Registration postmarked by May 24: $150
Checks should be made payable to Quigley Seminary.
Fee includes a designer Summer Enrichment T-shirt.
Students are asked to bring their own lunch.
Registration
Use the enclosed registration form for Summer Enrichment 2003.
Registrations will not be processed until the $50 deposit is received.
Though not necessary, full payment may be made when you register.
When your registration is received, a postcard will be sent as confirmation.
Course Schedules and Bus/Van pickup locations will be mailed by June 7,2004.
Payment Policy
Full payment, including bus transportation, is due by the first day of the
session.
Transportation
Bus/Van transportation will be provided for Summer Enrichment 2003 at an
additional cost of $30 per week. Transportation will service the City of Chicago and the
immediate suburbs. Students will be picked up from a parish location close to their home.
Archbishop Quigley is also easily accessible by CTA bus or train and METRA. Students can
purchase reduced fare CTA passes. Quigley is located on the corner of Rush and Chestnut
Streets, one half block west of the John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place.

TECHNOLOGY
HyperStudio Multimedia
Mr. Paul Davidson
Create interactive presentations using the authoring software HyperStudio. Learn how to create graphics, text boxes, animations, and sound effects. The final project will be to produce an original cartoon.
Image Editing
Mr. Paul Davidson
Learn how to put pictures into the computer, using scanning, digital photography, and the Internet. Then edit the pictures, creating special effects and entirely new images from parts of the originals.
PowerPoint Presentations
Mr. Paul Davidson
Create exciting multimedia presentations using MS PowerPoint software. Learn how to plan your presentation and include text, pictures, clipart, music, sound effects, and animation to create a professional looking presentation.
Surfing the Internet

The World Wide Web is a powerful educational tool, which can be both fun and informative. Students will become familiar with a variety of educational and fun web sites and also learn how to search for information using various search engines and portals.
Word Processing and Keyboarding

Keyboarding and word processing are essential skills for school today. With the software program Type to Learn, students will do keyboarding using all ten fingers correctly. With Microsoft Word 2000 students will edit and format documents in a variety of ways.
Fine Arts
Artistic Drawing

Learn a variety of painting/drawing techniques: line, texture, shape, volume, and color. Step by step lessons on drawing your favorite comic book or cartoon character. Use different drawing media, such as pencil, charcoal, or pastel. Show your artwork to family and friends.
Sculpturing

Remember playing with paper mache as a child? Using paper mache, learn how to make simple figures, designs, masks, and faces. You will be given the choice of what to focus on.
Guitar for Beginners

So you want to be a rock star? Start with the basic chords, add inspiration, and you may be on your way! Learn to read music and chords, how to strum and play popular songs. We provide the guitars in class.. You provide the rest.

Cooking for Kids

Learn how to make what you crave. This class will teach safe food handling practices and how to follow recipes to make the foods you like to eat. Students will have the opportunity to then eat their culinary delights.

How much do you know about the city in which you live? Who is that street named after? Students will learn more about Chicago, its origins, history, landmarks, and famous people and events. Quigleys downtown location is near to many places of interest.
SCIENCE
Aviation

How is a modern jet able to fly? What are all those instruments in the flight deck all about? With the help of your teacher, a pilot himself, and our flight simulation software, all of these mysteries will be explained, and you will learn to fly a plane. Up, up, and away.
Biology: The Chicken or the Egg?

What makes you or other things tick? Students will learn some of the fundamental facts about what makes something alive, and what is needed to stay alive. Course will include use of microscope, observation of microorganisms, and computer interface technology.
Engineering-Bridge Building

Why do bridges stand up? How many types of bridges are there? Find the answers to these and many more questions about bridges. We will also design and build our own bridges (out of wood). Who will have the best bridge?
Engineering-House Building

Have you ever thought about building a house? How is a wood frame home constructed? What does it take to build a roof? What is a joist or a rafter? These and more questions will be answered as you design and build your own wooden model house.
SPORTS

Both individual development and team playing will be emphasized. Athletes will participate in drills to improve their shooting, dribbling, and defense. Athletes will have the opportunity to apply these new or improved skills in "real game" situations.
Floor Hockey

Learn and develop good talent in the following skills: puck handling, passing, shooting, and defense. Athletes will also develop team spirit and sportsmanship.
Weightlifting and Lifetime Fitness

Learn the fundamentals of weight training and fitness, participating in a weight program that they design. Learn basic health, nutrition principles of everyday living.

Have you always wanted to learn how to swim? Is the dog paddle the only stroke you know? Learn the fundamentals of swimming, from breathing and floating, to the four basic strokes. Games and activities will add to the fun.

If you can swim at least 50 yards continuously, this course is for you. Swimmers will improve their skills and strokes. Swimmers will also explore other water skills, such as diving and water safety, and, of course, there will be fun and games along the way.

Self Defense Martial Arts

Wrestling

Athletes will be introduced to the sport of high school wrestling, receiving instruction on basic wrestling technique and safety. Learn on the Quigley varsity wrestling mats and participate in drills with others in a similar weight class.
