60 - 7th Grade boys and 56 - 6th Grade boys participated in this year's Academic Challenge. There were 14 teams on the 6th grade level and 15 teams on the 7th grade level., for a total of 19 elementary schools. Each team consisted of 4 students for either 6th or 7th grade. Archbishop Quigley's auditorium was packed with excitement as the teams prepared for the competition.
Round 1 was a 15 minute written exam which all partcipants took at the same time. The written exam, different for each grade, consisted of 25 questions worth 50 points. In Round 2, four teams were randomly selected to appear on the auditorium satge together at one time. Seven questions were read by Fr. Zi, the Master of Ceremonies, with the teams having 10 seconds to write down their answer and hold it up. Each question was worth 5 points, for a total of 35 points. There was no penalty for guessing in Round 2. In Round 2, every team had the opporunity to answer.
Scores from Round 1 and Round 2 were totaled to determine the top four teams from each grade. These finalists advanced into Round 3, the Lightening Round. For Round 3, no points were carried over from t he previous rounds. A total of 15 questions were read. As each question was read out load by the Master of Ceremonies, the first team to light up the "buzzer" light became the team to verbally give the answer. 5 points were awarded for a correct answer, but 2 points were deducted for an incorrect answer.
The questions used in competition were submitted by the participating schools, in 5 different areas: Religion, Math-Science, Geography-History, Literature, and Current Events. All participants received a certificate. Teammates on the top four teams on each level received a Medellion. Their elementary school was also presented with a Plaque.
Photos were taken of each team. Unfortunately, the quality of the photos is not very good, for which we apologize. The camera photo mode was incorrectly set.
